BIOGRAPHY: !From the Vandal Newsletter of April, 1988 written by Teresa Carr
with the help of information provided by John Glover Vandall of Larkspur,
California, a great grandson of B.C. Vandall.
Bartholomew Columbus Vandall was born in Logan County, Virginia in 1830 and
went to California during the Gold Rush of 1849. He was a pioneer miner for
some time, staking a claim with a Chinese miner, who proved himself faithful,
returning dollar for dollar what had been loaned him.
"B.C.", as he was called, went to San Francisco, and was in its political
life
at the beginning of California statehood. With much lawlessness rampant, he
became a member of the Vigilante Committee, and was later chosen as a member
of the California Assembly, 8th District, 1873-75, helping to formulate and enact
laws for the (then) new State of California. He had help from a dear friend
of the Murray Family, Judge Lindley, who had been sent by the Federal Government
to codify the laws of California. Judge Lindley, with his son and daughter were
guests in the Murry home. The two families became life-long friends. Bartholomew
C. Vandall was married to Elizabeth A. Murray January 18, 1870 at Gilroy, California.
B.C. Vandall established the first paper in San Francisco to cover "News
of
the Waterfront and Shipping", gleaning news of the arrival and departure,
and
the cargoes of all vessels. He drove his horse and buggy along the
waterfront, returning to the office in the afternoon, and working often into
the night to set up, type and print, with one or two assistants, "The San
Francisco Shipping Guide". The sheet, printed on one side, was ready for
distribution on Friday afternoons.
In later years, "B.C." went to Monterey County in California where
he raised
bees and fruit. It was a fine location and an interesting life for his
declining years, according to a family member. He resided in Monterey County
until his death at the age of 76. Bartholomew Columbus VANDALL and Elizabeth
Ann MURRAY were married on 18 Jan 1870 in Gilroy, Santa Clara, California.
Elizabeth Ann MURRAY (daughter of Robert Joseph MURRAY
and Clarissa TRUIT) was born on 17 Nov 1842 in Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas.
