57. James Vandal WESTLAKE was born on 14 Mar 1822 in New Haven, Nicholas, Virginia. He died on 17 Nov 1883 in , St. Louis, Missouri. !From the Vandal Newsletter, April, 1989.
James Vandal Westlake was born on March 14, 1922 on the family farm at New
Haven, Nicholas County, Virginia (now Ansted, Fayette County, West Virginia).
He left Virginia in 1844, at the age of 22, attended the Jones Business
College there, where he developed his skills at mathematics and business
practices.
Entering the boat supply busines, and then the iron foundry business, he
engaged in building the first iron bridge across the Mississippi River at
Alton. The firm name of Westlake and Jones was well known throughout the
region, and he later organized the Westlake & Button Novelty Iron Works, with
himself as president.
On 19 January, 1869, at St. Louis, he married Lizzie R. Palmer, daughter of
William and Cynthia (Martin) Palmer. Four children were born to this union,
Mable Prouhet, James L., Elizabeth P. and Blanch P.
James Vandal Westlake died at St. Louis 17 Novembwer, 1883 and is buried there.
A respected businessman, he was a prominent Mason, and a Knight Templar.
